HOW TO COMBAT OILY SKIN
Never start with moisturiser when you are testing new brands; start with cleansing. This is where you can have the most impact on oily, problem skin. Until you are sure this is being done well and not the root cause of any skin congestion, spending your hard-earned cash on serums or moisturisers is pointless.
When you try a new range, you should take a product at a time and use it for 4 - 5 days before introducing the next one, so you can make sure which are working/if your skin doesn't like anything. So... add one new product at a time (from whatever brand you try). Don't use them all at once as it will be too much for your skin, and you can't track what is working. Take cleansers first; use these for 4 - 5 days, alongside all the normal products you have in your routine. If it is improving, add in a toner. Repeat the same timeline and add in a scrub. Repeat the timeline and add in the moisturiser last.
EXFOLIATION IS CRUCIAL FOR OILY SKIN
It's recommended once or twice a week. Not more. If you overdo it, you can change the pH or Acid mantle balance on the skin. Your skin cells are shedding daily, but they tend to get stuck on the surface and build up if your skin is oily. As a result, they can harbour more bacteria on the surface of the skin, and this can be one of the factors to cause pores to block and spots to occur.
YOU WANT PRODUCTS THAT ALSO PROVIDE MOISTURE TO YOUR SKIN
We know this seems weird if you are producing too much oil, but there is truth in oil fights oil. If you use harsh products full of alcohol, it will strip the oil off, your sebaceous glands register it, and they produce more oil! To help oily skin, it is crucial to stop skin inflammation and provide the skin with some moisture to trick it into calming down.
DO NOT AVOID OIL BECAUSE YOUR SKIN IS OILY/SPOTTY
You need to avoid cheap mineral oil and paraffinium oil as these can worsen spots. They don't actually help break down your own oil, but good plant-based oils will help. Look at the ingredients list paraffinium oil is frequently used in skincare for spots, especially teen skincare.
DEFINITELY USE MUSLIN CLOTHES WITH YOUR CLEANSER
A new one each day so you need to buy at least 7. These are mild exfoliants and will help improve your skin without over stripping it.
